Thunder Begin Championship Defense with Nail-Biting Double Overtime Win

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in action

The Thunder star came to the Thunder back in 2019.

The Thunder's star player scored the winning baskets late in double overtime as the Oklahoma City Thunder opened their NBA title defense with a narrow victory over the visiting Rockets.

Last season's MVP poured in 35 points, featuring two clutch free throws with just mere seconds remaining in the second overtime, securing the champions a winning beginning.

The Rockets' big man top-scored with 39 points and also connected on a personal-best five shots from beyond the arc.

But the Thunder's rookie, who contributed 28 points of his own, played a major role together with the game's hero.

"Determination and defense," Gilgeous-Alexander commented of their showing. "We know that when we execute on defence we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—shots, missed attempts, good luck or bad luck. We did sufficient defence to secure the victory. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a good start."

Prior to the game, the team's title banner was unveiled at their home court, while the squad were presented with their championship rings.

Oklahoma City defeated the Indiana Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their maiden championship since the team moved in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had won the 1979 title.

Indiana will have the chance to secure some early revenge on Friday when they face Oklahoma, while the Houston are back on court on the same day at the Detroit Pistons.

Elsewhere, a massive effort of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine dimes from Luka Doncic was not enough to prevent his current team the Los Angeles Lakers from suffering a 119-109 defeat against the Warriors.

Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter added 23 points for the road team.

Los Angeles were without the league's top scorer LeBron James as he recovers from a back issue.
