The Black Phone
The director's claustrophobic thriller remains effective without requiring a continuation. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, multiple child abductions has left the youth frightened. But the non-functional line in the room repeatedly calls, with ghostly voices giving advice, while the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen could save him. A genuinely scary movie. The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the conflict between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for Mammon in Showalter's delightfully tacky true story regarding the shamed televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor acts as the venal Jim, who proclaims at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple begin profiting from the people's religious faith. It's a riot of tacky decor, bad makeup and bad faith, though Jessica Chastain achieves to depict Tammy Faye with compassion. October 14th, early morning, on Film4
