Trump Suggests Removal of FIFA World Cup Games from Boston, Olympic Games from California

Former President Trump has repeatedly stated he would influence FIFA to pull upcoming World Cup games from a host city based on municipal political climate, with Boston now being the third such city to receive such warnings from the White House. Moreover, Trump indicated he would evaluate parallel steps against LA for the upcoming Olympic Games due to perceived security concerns.

Legal Authority and Possible Pressure

Even though Trump does not have official jurisdiction to unilaterally remove either competition, he can exert influence the respective governing bodies overseeing each event to change host cities.

Context of Remarks

His remarks were made during a news conference with Javier Milei, who was present in the White House following the revelation of a massive bailout for the Latin American economy. At the close of the event, a media member asked Trump about a current “street takeover” in downtown Boston where police officers were targeted and a patrol car was ignited. The correspondent also asked if these incidents could cause the loss of hosting duties for the expanded World Cup.

“It's possible to take them away,” Trump stated concerning the World Cup games, set to be staged at the Foxborough venue. “Their mayor is ineffective … she is radical left, and they are occupying areas of the city. That is a major claim, isn't it?”

Urban Disturbances and Ideological Perceptions

Public disruptions, a digitally organized occurrence where groups of people gather on urban roads after dark to engage in dangerous driving, have become a repeated nuisance in American cities since the Covid-19 pandemic closures. Current similar events have turned violent in the state, notably in the city. However, these occurrences are typically not regarded as associated with any distinct partisan agenda.

“In cases where someone is doing a bad job, and I feel exist security risks, I would call the FIFA head, who is phenomenal, and tell him it should be shifted to an alternate venue,” he commented publicly. “And he would do that. He wouldn’t love to do it, but he would comply. Very easily, he would.”

FIFA Relationship

Gianni Infantino has publicly acknowledged his efforts to be visibly associated with Trump ahead of the 2026 event, planned to be hosted in numerous American venues across the United States along with two in the northern neighbor and multiple in Mexico. The head has participated at several Oval Office gatherings, facilitated Trump present the club tournament cup after the championship match, and has even postponed his FIFA's internal meeting to join Trump on a trip to the Middle East previously.

Earlier Warnings

Nevertheless, Trump from threatening the removal of World Cup matches from additional American venues. Recently, Seattle and San Francisco came under parallel comments, with Trump stating both urban centers were “governed by far-left extremists who lack understanding what they’re doing,” while criticizing the security conditions of both cities and claiming that matches could be relocated.

Official Rebuttal

FIFA vice-president Montagliani rejected Trump’s claims when he reacted subsequently at a event in London.

“It is FIFA’s tournament, under our authority, we decide these matters,” the vice-president stated. “With all due respect to current world leaders, football is bigger than them and football will endure their administration and their government. That is the essence of our game, that it is bigger than any individual and bigger than individual states.”

Olympics Threat

On Tuesday, Trump’s answer to a question about the Massachusetts city veered into a similar threat regarding the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

“If I believed the city was not going to be adequately ready, I will shift it to a different city if necessary,” he remarked. “For the Olympics I’d probably have to get a different kind of permission, but we would proceed.”

Any approval Trump mentioned would must come via the IOC. Their leader, she, was elected to her position in spring and has not yet hold a public appearance with him, although she indicated that she hopes for a meeting with the US figure at some point.

Further Comments

He also criticized California governor Newsom’s management of the LA wildfires, saying that a comparable scenario could cause the removal of the Olympics.

“If Newsom refuses to cooperate, we are going to have to be firm,” Trump said.

The warning was similarly direct for Boston.

“They should address these issues,” he remarked. “That is my message.”
